It's only been two years since the release of Diary of Dead, the last entry in Romero's beloved zombie movie series, but the horror director has already completed work on the sixth Dead film, known as ...of the Dead. Slated for a 2009 release, Romero's upcoming ...of the Dead definitely does not skimp on the blood 'n guts.

How gory is the movie going to be? Well, if the viciously grisly trailer recently pulled from the movie websites around the internet (yanked by the studio) is any indication as to the overall level of violence in the movie, we'd say more than you can stomach.

In the trailer, pinky finger-severing, jugular-feasting, exploding heads, zombie family member executions, and other related carnage are all depicted. To be honest, aside from featuring a healthy dose of blood, the movie looks like a huge step up from 2007's somewhat underwhelming Diary of the Dead, which felt more like a low-budget zombie-themed take on the Blair Witch Project than the kind of stuff that made George A. Romero such a hero to horror fans.

More Like "Dawn of the Dead," Less Like "Diary of the Dead"

...of the Dead takes place on an isolated island off the coast of North America where an outbreak is turning people into flesh-eating zombies. Sounds a bit like the last hundred zombie flicks you've seen, including Romero's holy batch, until you find out just what kind of zombie tall they're telling this time around, one that seeks to shatter the notion of the countryside being a place of peace and safety. The truth is ...of the Dead is shaping up to have a real shot at reinvigorating the horror franchise.

In fact, ...of the Dead (previously dubbed as Island of the Dead) has more in common with Romero's quenessential zombie masterpiece that made him a household name, 1978's Dawn of the Dead which was later remade by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) in 2004. Both Dead films are set in locales cut off from the rest of the world and from anyone who can come to the aid of survivors. This time though, instead of taking place in a shopping mall, the new film's secluded island backdrop is home to farms, horse-riding, gun-slinging cowboys, and plenty of wide open areas. If you remember, the first black and white Dead installment, Night of the Living Dead, took place in a Pennsylvanian farmhouse surrounded by countryside, a rural setting similar to the one featured in ...of the Dead.

We're definitely excited to see how Romero's next zombie movie comes together, as it seems as though he's headed in the right direction to please fans.

Feast your hungry eyes on our 45 screens from George A. Romero's ...of the Dead below.

This rules! I have a feeling Romero heard the rumblings about his last flick and is poised to redeem himself with a kickass picture. I can't for this film to get released. Nice work Eater, good to have you back!
