The first big horror movie of 2009, David S. Goyer's The Unborn, which opens today, is receiving awful reviews from critics, even horror authorities like Fangoria gave the film a measly 1.5 skulls (The Unborn was also the cover story of their most recent issue). Ain't it Cool News also gave the movie an overwhelmingly negative review, warning readers to "avoid this film" and later saying that "when the film finished, all I could think were 3 things: 1: How did the people get the money to shoot this stuff? 2: Why did Gary Oldman agree to be in this film and 3: All original ideas and creativity are completely dead in Hollywood." The Unborn currently has a 14% rating on RottenTomatoes, just slightly higher than Bride War's 12%.
Goyer, who's most notable effort as a director being the absolutely wretched third Blade movie, is more known for his screenwriting chops (Dark City, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins). But for anyone who watched the chilling trailer for The Unborn, including me, I'm still surprised how bad people are saying it is. Well, here's to hoping My Bloody Valentine 3-D will be good.
